Calumet Waterworks is on Lake Shore Drive and can be found by taking M203 past McLean State Park approximately 2 miles. Park in the Calumet Waterworks parking lot and then head across Lake Shore Drive to the wooden steps. Follow the trail straight ahead into the woods. When you come to a clearing, you will see some signs that will help you to learn about Sugar Plum and Balsam Fir trees. At the clearing, follow trail (very wide) to the right and look for information about Douglas Fir. Continue in this direction to the second clearing. Here you will find a shelter, and a water pump. (It’s fun to try!) Just past the pump, take the trail behind it to the “T”, and go to the right. Follow the trail to a bridge over a small creek. (You can learn about Ironwood, Pin Cherry, and Mountain Maple along the way.) Cross the creek and count 24 steps! Vere to the right at the fork in the path! (If you went the right way, you will see a sign to learn about White Spruce in about 18 steps.) Continue on path to learn about Northern White Cedar. Continue to follow the orange trail marker and eventually you will come to a bench and then another bridge. When you get to the fork in the path near the giant boulder along the creek, turn right (away from creek) and follow trail into the woods… (this time not following orange trail marker.) Follow the path over a high green wooden bridge. Stay straight and view the map of park on the right! Keep straight and pass information about Quaking Aspen, and Paper Birch. After you pass the giant pile of birch logs the path widens. Now you are getting CLOSE! When you reach the “T”, you will see a large rock pile on your left. You will find the letterbox somewhere close, when you solve this ridde: If you are STUMPED, remember that letterboxing ROCKS! (If you need to use the bathroom, there is an outhouse to the right up the road, or to the left, just a minutes walk back at Waterworks Park.

Have fun learning about the nature of this beautiful area. The hike should take about 20-30 minutes. (There is also a first-finders gift for the first one to find this letter box.) :)
