History

This is the second in a series. As I did not pass my favorite location, I will have to hide another one soon. I have placed the box at Dunbar Forest Experiment Station, which is a 5,700-acre tract near Sault St. Marie owned by Michigan State University. The public may hike on this land, but may not camp or use a motorized vehicle. The land is often used by hunters in the fall, so be sure to wear orange during this season. Mosquito repellent is also useful. This land has been part of the university since 1925. Although this location has a Sault Ste. Marie, MI mailing address it is located closer to Barbeau, MI.

You can find out more about Dunbar Forest Station at http://www.maes.msu.edu/dunbar/index.htm.

Trails are maintained at least once a year. When picking a starting point, I wanted to choose an easy to find location. Hence, I decided to choose the trail created by the power/telephone lines. This location the right side on the road if you turned onto 13 Mile from Scenic Drive, and on the left side if you came via Riverside Driver to 13 Mile. The location is less than a tenth of a mile from the intersection of 13 Mile and Scenic Drive.

This box should take 1-1.5 or 2 hours round trip.

Directions

To get to this location from Sault Ste. Marie first take I-75, Mackinac Trail, Shunk, M-129, or Riverside Drive (depending on your location) south to 9 Mile Road. Follow 9 Mile road (left) to Riverside Drive and turn right onto Riverside Drive. There is a stop sign and a small corner store (Kik’s) at this corner (9 Mile and Riverside Drive). Continue on Riverside Drive until you reach 13 Mile. Take a left onto 13 mile road. Follow 13 Mile Road until you can see the end, where it meets Scenic Drive. On your left you will see a telephone pole and a clearing, park there.

From the south take I-75 north to the Gains Highway Exit, past Kinross. Turn right and follow Gains Highway until it ends at Tone Road. Turn left onto Tone Rode and follow it until you come to a stop sign (there is a gas station here and a park and ride across the road). Turn left onto M-129. After about 3 miles turn right onto 15 Mile Road (a paved road- if you turn the wrong way you will be on a dirt road). Follow 15 Mile to the stop sign where it intersects Riverside Drive (the post office is here). Turn left onto Riverside Drive. Continue until you reach 13 Mile Road (note 14 Mile does not go all of the way through). Take a left onto 13 mile road. Follow 13 Mile Road until you can see the end, where it meets Scenic Drive. On your left you will see a telephone pole and a clearing, park there. Across the way, there is a small lot of privately owned land which is not part of the forest which you have been driving through.

To get to this location from Barbeau, follow Scenic Drive north towards the Dunbar Boat Launch (between 12 and 13 mile). Turn onto 13 mile, go less than a tenth of a mile and park in the clearing by the telephone pole on your right.

Clues

Be sure to wear boots if it has been raining of late and bring plenty of mosquito repellent.
1. Follow the telephone line to the first trail going to the left. It is located just after the second pole and across from a clearing.
2. Shortly a trail merges from the right, ignore it and keep going strait.
3. After about 10-15 minutes a trail intersects from the left. Ignore it, but note that you are on the correct path and not lost.
4. Continue about 37 paces until you intersect a trail on your right. There is a boulder marking this corner.
5. Turn right onto the path.
6. In a few minutes (4) you will find at the trail ends and you must turn onto a new trail. When you reach the meander, turn left.
7. After about 5 minutes you will intersect a curve.
8. Turn right.
9. Shortly after this point you will find a log for sitting, take a break.
10. After about 10 minutes you will find that the trail has a slight Y.
11. Merge left.
12. This trail shortly takes you to the Charlotte River. Enjoy the view.
13. Follow the deer right, until you reach the ravine.
14. You have reached Beaver Creek. The beavers dam this each spring and flood 13 Mile Road.
15. Turn around, away from the creek.
16. Find the Siamese twins and walk to them.
17. Proceed on to the slender leaning tree between two cousins.
18. Go two paces past the tree.
19. Go to the 4 foot tall pine stump next to a squatter cousin.
20. I feel quite blue and am in a hollow place.
21. After you perform your duties, wander back to the trail.
22. Follow your steps back to the last intersection.
23. Turn left at the T.
24. Left at the next T. (A few logs were cleared from the trail here in 2008). If you hit the intersection with the boulders, turn around.
25. As the path meanders you will see nature’s beauty. After several minutes(10?) you will pass an old well and trail on your left.
26. You will emerge into the uplands near the yellow protector.
27. Follow the power back to your vehicle.
