Quest in the Rindge NH Cemetery on Main Street

1) Start at the first congregational church in the center of Rindge NH.
What would be another name for this building?

(hint; a place where town gatherings use to happen)

2) Go around the side through the fence and the building side into the cemetery.
Take about 15 paces up the hill to visit the veteran whose grave is made of metal.
What is his name? (clue: veteran’s graves have flags next to them)

What war did he fight in? What kind of metal is his grave made of?

3) Go to the left and up to the middle of the large trees of three, about 23 paces. Here are two graves made of slate of an early state. One man of 52 years and one woman of 74. (when were they born?)
What is the saying on Mr. John Spo ord’s gravestone? 32

4) Head down the hill toward the back of the carriage house at a 2:00 o’clock angle, past two angels in slate. Follow the wall down the hill to angel carved in slate that resides in the foreground of an ivory obelisk for Emory (1876).
What is the saying on Rachel Kimball’s stone?

5) Turn to your left, head about 19 paces to the 10 o’clock position.
Here you will find some marble placed here marking a death on Jan 28, 1890.
What is the name on the stone? (look closely a bush may be in the way).

Look carefully you should find a hidden treasure in a box next to the two persons’ grave.
Please sign your name and re-hide the box. (look under some leaves)

Some other things to think about while visiting the cemetery.

• Do you see people’s first names on the gravestones that we no longer use today?
• Where the trees here when the people were buried? Why or why not?
• How long does it take lichen to grow?
• How big is the lichen on some of the stones? How long do you think it has been growing?
• What years were the wars fought in?
What war did Col George Stearns fight in if he was born in 1817 and died in 1896?
•Do we use the same words as were used in the 1700’s? Or have we stopped using some of them?
•Why are some of the stones in slate, marble, and are there any in granite?
• Why did people stop using marble for gravestones?
• Did you find the Solomon family sadness, two children’s gravestones off alone?
• How can you tell who was a veteran?
• Can you tell what families had a lot of money? How?
• Does it seem like most people die in spring, summer, fall, or winter?
• What was the tomb use for?
•Are there people still being buried in this cemetery? How can you tell?
•Did you see the book made of stone?
