These letterboxes are located in Children’s Woods at or near an old cellar hole, the remains of the house owned by the Carey family in the 1800s. There are two different ways to enter Children’s Woods and find the letterboxes:

First way: From the traffic lights in downtown Jaffrey (a 5-way intersection), turn onto Stratton Rd. Go .4 miles, and the trail head (marked with a wooden sign and small kiosk) can be found on the right side between 92 Stratton Rd. and the driveway for 96 Stratton Rd. (You’ll need to park a bit further up the road, either in Conant Cemetery on the left or at the park where the road forks.) Follow the trail all the way to the end (do not take turn off the trail at any of the signs along the way, including the one near the beginning that says To Carey Rd.) At the end of the trail, it will “T” into a dirt road which is Carey Rd. Turn right onto Carey Rd. and start looking around the area on the right side of the road, a bit set back from the road front. In a few minutes, you will likely find the cellar hole. The first box is somewhere around the edge of the cellar hole. It is NOT INSIDE THE CELLAR HOLE. The second box is in or around the stone wall behind the cellar hole.

Second way: Again from the traffic lights in downtown Jaffrey, turn as if you’re starting to take Stratton Rd. You will see a sign that says Rails to Trails. Walk along this rail trail for a while until you get to a sign on the left that says Children’s Woods and Carey Rd. (Note: you will also pass a sign that just says Children’s Woods. Do not take that trail.) At the Children’s Woods/Carey Rd sign, turn left onto Carey Rd. Walk for about 5 minutes or less and on the left will be a sign for the Children’s Woods trail. Before you get to this sign start looking on the left side of the dirt road for the cellar hole. It’s set back a bit from the road front.

About the letterboxes:

During the 2008/09 school year, the 4th grade classes at Jaffrey Grade School and a teacher/naturalist from the Harris Center for Conservation Education researched several different aspects of Children’s Woods. One class studied the forest communities in the woods, another researched the Carey cellar hole, and the third class investigated the stone walls. Each class spent several hours over the course of 5 months doing field work to observe and collect data, and many more hours looking at primary sources, and interpreting the data they collected. The fruits of their labor are contained in the letterboxes and in a field guide at the Stratton Rd. kiosk. We hope you enjoy learning about Children’s Woods as much as we did!
