Directions to Sloan Gorge. From the center of Woodstock, take Rock City Road .6 mile, then turn right on Glasco Turnpike. Go 1.7 mi and then turn left on West Saugerties Rd. After 1.1 mi, turn right on Goat Hill Rd. Bear right at the corner again for .1 mi to Stoll Rd. Turn left on Stoll Road. After .2 mi you’ll see the WLC kiosk on the left. Please park only in the Sloan Gorge parking lot.
See photos and history of the 88 acre preserve at Woodstocklandconservancy.org.
This is about a 1 1/2 mile loop hike.
Walk through the green bridge trusses. Take the trail to the right of the double yellow diamond markers on tree. The trail is well marked in yellow diamonds. Enjoy the flora and fauna as you walk along.
Box #1
When you ascend a tumble of rocks(cliff like) you'll see a vernal pool. Start counting the yellow trail markers facing you. Stop when you get to the 15th one on a knobby, small tree. If you pass between pieces of a large tree cut to clear the trail you have gone too far. Look to your right. Seek out the gnarly, large old tree with a split base. Look under the bark on the right side of the split between the roots. You'll find a wee figure guarding his treasure. Continue on the trail for the next box.
Box #2
When you ascended the tumble of rocks and saw the vernal pool you were a third of the way to the letterbox. As you come to the rock shelter (ledge of rock )on the right of the trail look to the right for twin white birch trees. Walk along the rock face past the birches and past a large pine tree. Watch for a pine tree leaning up the rock with an exposed tangle of roots. The letterbox is under the system of roots all the way to the right covered with rocks. Please rehide well. Return to the trail and continue on. The trail loops back through the gorge. The rock formations were created during the ice age. Exciting Catskill geology along the stream. You'll see bluestone quarries used from the 1800s-early 1900s, Devonian strata and Mesozoic fractures. This preserve is a gem. Enjoy!
