Clues
Estimated Time: 5 minutes once you're at the pond
Terrain: Grass, on the edge of a pond. Very easy. OK for kids.

Southold was settled in 1640, and was reportedly the first English settlement on Long Island. The land was purchased in the summer of 1640 from an Indian tribe, the Corchaugs. The Indian name of what became Southold was Yennicott.

The name Southold is believed by some to be a misspelling of Southwold, which is a coastal town in the corresponding English county of Suffolk. The settlement’s leader, the Reverend John Youngs, was born and brought up in Southwold, Suffolk, England. The settlement also consisted of a number of families that are still well-known names in our town including Horton, Conklin, Wells, Terry and Tuthill.

In order to find the Frog Pond letterbox, you must first find the Southold neighborhood known as Yennecott Park. Take Yennecott Park Drive, go past Tuthill Road and on your left you’ll find a small pond that my boys have named the Frog Pond.

Stand at the edge of the road and face the pond. On the left side of the pond you’ll see a storm drain and a 35 MPH sign. Enter the path there, it takes you around the pond. Stop when you reach the “Trespassing” sign (please do not trespass). Now face the pond and look for a tree stump. Under that stump and moss you’ll find our letterbox. You don’t have to dig, it’s at the pond’s edge. It is a small clear container marked with an “Official Geocache” label. Be careful not to fall in or drop the box into the pond.

Enjoy the frogs and turtles and be sneaky around the neighborhood kids who frequent this spot.

PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN INK PAD.
