In western Wisconsin, you'll find the charming village of Elmwood nestled in a valley that was the epicenter of a number of UFO sightings in the 1970's and 80's. There were so many, in fact, that national media came in and there were even plans to build a landing strip for them here. Today, Elmwood celebrates its annual local festival as "UFO Days" in July. Put on your tinfoil hat and head out for your own close encounter.
From State Highway 72 in Elmwood, turn onto County Road P (Public Road) to Butternut Park. From the parking lot there, head out past the picnic shelter to the edge of the woods where you'll find a trail to the top of Butternut Hill. Near the top of the hill, the trail splits. Go to the right and take approximately 50 steps. To the right, about ten feet into the woods, you will spot a flat, mossy-topped stump with a smaller charred stump beside it. There is a flying saucer inside the mossy stump beneath some bark. Please rehide well.
(When you leave the park, if you turn right and continue up the hill on County Road P, you will find the gravel pit marked with a sign commemorating the sighting of a UFO there. There are several such signs in the area around Elmwood, but local residents have told me, "We don't like to talk about that much.")
