We are reminded of the legend of Paul Bunyan every time we pass through Oscoda, Michigan and see the large statue of him. We have heard many different renditions of the old folk tale and enjoy them all. We especially like to believe that Oscoda was his hometown. We have a little story that we thought you might like to hear about Paul.

One day Paul Bunyan decided to go and visit the Old AuSable River Walk & Ski Path. When he got to the Oscoda AuSable Senior Center he noticed what a beautiful path had been created in the backyard of the senior center. He walked closer to get a better look and noticed that there was a path to the left and also to the right. He decided that he was going to see where the path on the left went. As he walked the path he passed a lot of big and little Charlie Brown Christmas Trees and then noticed that there was a nice park bench on the left side of the path. Paul was quite tired and decided to sit down and watch all the little birds. After resting for a few moments, he continued his walk and watched lots of little birdies fly high and low. He walked until he reached another park bench, on the left side of the path, where he again sat and rested. Paul actually fell asleep and suddenly awoke when one of those little birdies landed right on the end of his long axe. This little birdie sang quite a beautiful song and began flying around right in front of Paul. Paul hopped off the bench and the little birdie lead him down the path another 31 "Bunyan Size" steps until the two of them reached a small somewhat sandy trail to the left of the walking path. Paul continued to follow the birdie 43 "Bunyan Size" steps to a clearing where moss was growing on the forest floor. From there they went another 30 "Bunyan Size" steps to a downed tree on the right side of the trail. The birdie landed on the tree and continued singing its beautiful songs, Paul decided to lay down next to the tree and carve a stamp that portrayed what he thought that he looked like. He ended up falling asleep after carving the stamp while listening to the birdie. Before Paul fell asleep, he placed the box that you seek 7 steps off the path under the downed tree nearest to where the tree and the forest floor meet :)

Please email us if you find anything wrong with our "Paul Bunyan" letterbox or to just give us an update, we would love to hear about his status since we only summer in Oscoda. Thanks! 2 Small Gardner's
