“Goose on the Loose”

We lost our goose in Keene and think it might be hiding out at Goose Pond. Join us in our search by driving north on Court Street to East Surry Road, a right hand turn. In a short distance the Goose Pond Conservation Area will be on your right. Pull in and park. Follow the trail until you reach the pond, about one half mile. Step over the log and turn right to follow the white dot trail. You will shortly cross over a spillway. (Sometimes it is dry but if there has been lots of rain you may be glad you wore sandals or hiking shoes.) Continue on the trail past a concrete platform and into the woods. Continue to follow the white dot trail for 15-20 minutes. Other trails are visible but the white dot trail stays closest to the lake. Watch for the blazes.

When you cross a short land bridge (lake to your left, swampy area down to the right) look left at the lake and spot a very large rock and a somewhat smaller rock on the shore ahead. (The day we went we also spotted 9 turtles sunning themselves on a log in the lake.) Follow the path around to the large rock. When you reach the rock you will see a group of 5 hemlock trees in your path. Standing with your back to the hemlocks and the lake, take about 19 steps into the woods in order to reach a mossy, knobby tree. When you are at the tree, turn left. Take 5 steps and look at the base of a small hemlock. That goose should be hiding under some sticks and pine needles. I checked it on 9/25/14 and all is well.

As always, be discreet when finding and re-hiding.

By the way, the big rock is a great spot for a picnic.
