BOX HAS BEEN REPLACED. We recently found this box (with over 100 entries) water-damaged but it has now been replaced. Please be careful resealing Ziploc bags and boxes for all letterboxes!

Getting There: From The I440 Beltline: Take the Gorman Street exit from the beltline and head north on Gorman to Avent Ferry Road. Take a left onto Avent Ferry and follow it several miles until you see the entrance to the park on your left.

About Lake Johnson: Lake Johnson was constructed in 1955 by the Army Corps of Engineers as a drinking water reservoir for the citizens of Raleigh. Since the lake was retired from serving as a reservoir, its primary purpose is water based recreation. Lake Johnson Park is composed of a 150+ acre lake and 300+ acres of land. It is maintained by a spillway and has a fairly consistent water level.

Clues: : Beginning at the Boathouse, carefully cross Avent Ferry Road using the crosswalk. Follow the path into the woods past the “Raleigh Parks” sign. Pass three man-hole covers on your left. One is painted green, one is marked “S400”, the other is marked “30”. Continue on the path to the man-hole on your right (#29). Take the path to the right that goes uphill. Go past the tall pine with a blue blaze to the next manhole (1/2 way up the hill). Look right for the “five finger” gum tree. It will be next to a skinny Y-shaped tree and the hugging Pine and Tulip trees. The letterbox is in the base of the finger tree. Please be careful not to be seen and cover the box back up with leaves and bark.
