The Loft Cinema at 3233 E. Speedway is Tucson’s premiere venue for art films - independent, foreign, alternative and classic narrative films and documentaries.
In the mid-'70s the Loft was a tree house film club where anyone could join for the price of admission. For decades, fans of arthouse and independant movies flocked to its tiny upstairs screening room hidden just south of the University. In the early 90s, however, the Loft relocated to a large, very visible but somewhat derelict building on Speedway. The move doubled the Loft's screens and more than quadrupled its seating capacity, but the promise of this space was yet to be realized. The Loft quietly continued it work as Tucson's only independent movie theater until 2002, when owner Joe Esposito sold his baby to the Tucson Cinema Foundation.
The Loft transitioned into a nonprofit arts organization, and has since hosted more than 100 filmmakers and scholars and screened films from more than 50 countries. Its expanded programming includes two free film series: the Tucson International Children’s Film Festival in July, and Essential Cinema, a series of classic art films on the big screen in new 35mm prints. It also has programs to support local filmmakers. It has been named Best of Tucson by the readers of the Tucson Weekly every year since 2002 and received a Lumie from the Tucson Pima Arts Council in 2005 for Outstanding Emerging Arts Organization.
To find the letterbox, you may want to have a bike to lock to the bike rack on the east side of the patio. But there's ample parking and you can just pretend to a Bicycle Thief). In the plantings to the south, towards the street, you'll see two rocks. The box will be happy to see you.
