Red Hat Letterbox LbNA #: 4857
Clues The Red Hat Society is a group of women age 50 and older. Their belief is that there is fun after 50 for women from all walks of life. For more information go to www.redhatsociety.com. This "Red Hat Letterbox" was planted by a local chapter called 'The Cinnamon Tarts'. You can spot a red hatter by the red hat and clashing purple clothes she wears. We invite all letterboxers of any age or gender to look for this box.
Directions---Salmon River State Forest. Take Route 66 East through Columbia and Hebron. When you see the "Smokey the Bear" sign look after the sign for a roadside pull-off on the right. Park here. This box is about 8-10 minutes one way.
Park and enter the woods by going past the gate. Walk on the old forest road and in about 4 0r 5 minutes you will come to a funny shaped shagbark hickory tree and large boulders on the right. ( be sure to bring your clues for the DEP Salmon River State Forest Letterbox and Eagle Eyes Letterbox) Keep walking on the road up a slight hill. On your left you will go past an opening in the stone wall. Keep walking a short ways further until you see a road to the left which you will take. Walk past the logs on the left of the road to a pine tree standing alone on the left edge of the road. Stand facing the pine tree, take 9 steps in a northwest direction to a hollowed out log. The Red hat lettebox is in this log. It should be removed from the bottom of the log on the west side. |
