Bats Cave.
Directions:
Park at the Golden Rod Grange on 625 Old Homestead Highway, Swanzey NH. Start counting urban steps at the white picket fence, up the paved road toward the cemetery. When you have counted 39 urban steps, turn right. You will be standing on the premise of The Potash Bowl. During the early part of the nineteenth century and possibly earlier much of the business of the general stores was by barter and one of the items taken in trade was wood ashes. These ashes were stored here and that is how it got its name. The brick building in front of you is the backside of the 3rd oldest outdoor theater. Denman Thompson along with George Ryer wrote the four act play "The Old Homestead". It opened in April of 1886 at the Boston Theater. This play made Denman Thompson a wealthy man. He toured with the play throughout the United States, and debuted with it on Broadway in 1904. In 1915, after his passing, it was made into a motion picture of the same name by the Famous Players Film Company. In 1936 The Potash Bowl became the home of “The Old Homestead” play. At 57 degrees North West take 80 urban steps. You should be standing at the bench donated by Jerome Ebbighausen, director of The Old Homestead play. Mr. Ebbighausen has been directing this play for over 30 years. Turn and walk toward stage right and up the gravel road. Just past the second brown building on your left is a stone wall that runs along the road to the Carpenter home. Take 14 urban steps on the inside of this stone wall. Hidden deep in a creavous of the wall, under pine needles and leaves you will find the Letter Box.
