THE NUCLEAR LAKE LETTERBOX

Name: The Nuclear Lake Letterbox
Where: On the AT in Pawling, NY
Number of boxes: 1
Placed by: The Hardy Hikers
Clues: Easy
Placed: July 6, 2003
Distance: About 1.2 miles
Time: 45 minutes (one way)
Terrain: Moderate

Directions: The AT crosses NY Route 55 in Pawling, NY just west of and half way up the rise from the RT 55/292 intersection. At the top of the hill on the north side of RT 55 is a parking area for 4-6 cars. A connector trail to the AT exits the parking lot opposite the road, so you don’t have to walk back down the road. If you get lost in the parking lot, I suggest you take up another hobby.

Clues: In the parking lot the trail starts with a good hump to get your legs going and then slants down under the power lines. At the end of the trail there is a small wooden poster board where the AT goes north/south, to get to the lake you will go north. The trail twists and turns until it forks two ways. Go on the better used right trail (the AT) you will see some ledges on your left. After 5 to 10 minutes you will rock hop a small stream and soon after you will go over a bridged stream. (There are some big crayfish in here.) After the bridge you will hike up on some ledge and through some mountain laurel and see two sister pines on your right. Continue through two stonewalls; the second adjoins a large rock on the right side. You will go over a second bridged stream and then through a large split rock. Shortly after going through the split rock the trail will merge left onto a grass road. The trail on the road is marked by cedar posts and will soon narrow into the trail. The lake is now on your right and the trail will soon dip down to run along its side. There are a few lookouts or fishing spots along this part of the trail and to find the box you must find the one that has the following. A large rock in the middle of it. Three black birch trees next to the rock. A pile of rocks about ten feet from the shore. When you find the spot that matches the description stand with the three trees on your right. Then take a compass reading of 240 degrees and take 38 paces in that direction. You should end up near a tree with a rotting base. From here you should be able to see a large rock in about the same direction. If you walk straight up to the rock there will be a blue berry bush about head level. The box is under the rock to the north of the blue berry bush. After finding the box you might consider taking a dip in the lake. IT’S A GLOWING EXPERIENCE!!!!
