RISK DISCLAIMER: There is quite a bit of trash around this area so I expect people come there, most likely at night. I have been there several times during the day and I have never once seen anyone, but it's pretty obvious someone is there sometimes. Use your own good sense and personal caution - don't traipse off into the woods alone if you see some strangers hanging around, right? Thanks!

DIFFICULTY: Quick & easy (45 steps into a wooded area)

VISIBILITY: Could be high (but again - I've never seen anyone there, myself, so usually pretty low)

Starting point is at the Zavalla Jiffy Mart located at the intersection of highway 63 and 69.

For those of you who enjoy clues that are "figure it out yourself" type clues, here is that version:

From Zavalla Jiffy Mart, turn left, onto highway 69 south. Keep going about 12 minutes (13 miles), it's in the woods behind the shelter on your left.

For those of you who enjoy clues that are more detailed, scroll down for those.

(times & miles are approximate!)

3.7 miles (or 3:37 minutes): Landmark #1 is Johnson Missionary Baptist Church (on the right)

6.23 miles (or 6:8 minutes): Landmark #2 is the sign for Kitchen's Cemetery (you can not see the actual cemetery, just the sign for it, that's all)

8.7 miles (or 8:02 minutes): Landmark #3 is the sign for Jasper County Line (on the right)

10.1 miles (or 9:10 minutes): Landmark #4 is a bridge (with sign) for the Neches River

11.7 miles (or 10:35 minutes): Landmark $5 is that you should notice when the right lane you are driving in opens up into two lanes now (for passing, etc)

13.7 miles (or 12:25 minutes): Destination (on the left)

Did you go too far?
If you reach the city of Colmesneil, that is too far.

The destination is a rickety looking wooden shelter that you will see on the left, perhaps an old rest area or picnic area, maybe? There is a fairly big concrete section where you can pull off the main road so you have a place to park safely.

Once you are off the road, go to the shelter and stand at the edge, facing into the woods.

Walk just about 5 steps to the first big tree, very close to the shelter.

Turn left.

Walk about 15 steps, you'll see two big trees pretty close to each other (on your left).

Keep going.

Walk about 25 more steps (total of 40), and you'll see another big tree (on your left). It's a big oak tree, with a smaller pine tree in front of it.

The box is hidden on the left side of the bigger oak, tucked in between that big tree and two smaller trees that are coming up beside it.

Be sure to tuck it in well again and re-hide carefully because I will not be able to check on it very often.

Bonus Fun!

The City of Colmesneil is just a few more miles down the road and they have a fantastic recreational lake for families to enjoy. It is a fundraiser for their local school district - great idea! It is called Lake Tejas.

It is fine to bring your own food and water toys. Or, you can purchase food at their snack bar and rent their big tubes. There are shaded picnic tables (first come, first served, or reserve in advance for a small fee), or you can just hang out on the beach. There are also cabins.

There is a Wet Willie water slide, a high diving board, and a super-high diving board, and also a separate area for little kids, and canoes and paddle boats to rent. They have pool tables and a juke box.

Restrooms/showers are not fancy, but are nice enough, work well, and are clean.

Check website for updated information about fees, etc:

Have a great day!
