Begin at Bearskin Lodge (located about 30 miles up the Gunflint Trail, from Grand Marais, MN-www.bearskin.com).

NOTE: You may want to check in at the office and ask for a trail map to help guide your way on this hike, and allow you to explore other linked trails as you proceed. Both boxes can be found on foot or on skis or snow shoes. Box 1 requires some walking up and down steep hills and would only be for advanced skiers. Box 2 is quick and easy for all. You should be able to complete both in under an hour on foot.

BOX 1: BEARSKIN BOX

Begin at the steps of Bearskin Lodge. Follow the lakeside trail to the northwest end of East Bearskin Lake, past cabin 1 and the the staff lodging at the end of the lake. Continue on the path until you get to the Ranger's Cabin and site a road to your right. Follow the road until you get to the entrance to the Bear Cub trail off to your left. If you cross another road, you've gone too far.

Follow the Bear Cub trail. When you see trail signs, follow the "one way" and avoid the "do not enter". At the top of a hill, the trail will form a "T". Check out the trail map on your right to see where you are, then take the northwest trail (right and labeled "one way") at the "T".

Continue climbing. When you reach the top of the last hill, you'll be in the highest spot in the area. Take a look around and see if you can spot Canada and the lodge you just left, across East Bearskin Lake.

Turn to 90 degrees and site a broken tree. Your first box is inside. Be sure to seal bags and conceal the box with bark or sticks if needed when you return it to its hiding place.

You can return to the lodge by going back the way you came or continue on the Bear Cub trail and explore. There will be lots of strawberries in the fall, and probably lots of bears eating them too! Stay alert.

BOX 2: THE HUMMINGBIRD

Begin at the Steps of Bearskin Lodge and head back to the parking lot (marked by a sign that says parking lot and main office). Follow the signs leading to the Beaver Dam Trail. Go left when you run into cabin 10. Cross a dirt road and pick up the trail again at the North/South Link sign. Go left.

Site an old teepee on your left (in disrepair when box was set). Continue on path passing one trail light. Site a cairn of slate on the left. The box is hidden under stones and bark behind the cairn.

Be sure to seal the bags and re-hide the box carefully when you are done as this box is visible to hikers coming from the other direction. Return to lodge the way you came or continue on, exploring the many trails in the area.
