Gandan Monastery is the biggest monastery in UB, located in the 3rd district (any taxi driver will take you there if you just say "GON-don").
You can get in for free, but to see the big gold Buddha and find this letterbox, you'll have to buy a ticket (just a couple dollars; kids free). Spend some time visiting the whole center because there's lots to see, do and hear (chanting!!).
Finding the box: once you've entered the big Buddha hall, follow the prayer wheels around to the left, until you get all the way to the back, behind the Buddha. All along the walls are smaller Buddhas on red tables. The box is hidden in the crevice between tables 8 and 9 in the direct center behind the big Buddha.
My advice is to sit yourself down right there on the floor and do your stamping, because if you leave the building the ticket taker might not let you back in to re-hide the box!
Good luck, and don't forget to say a few prayers while spinning the prayer wheels as you go through.
