This year in the Granville 4th and 5th grade Young Scholar’s classes, we learned about many cunning and ferocious pirates. One of the most fearsome of these characters was Edward Teach a.k.a. Blackbeard. Although little is known of his early years, it is known that Blackbeard built his pirate army up to one of the largest during the Golden Age of Piracy. He operated mostly around the eastern coast of America and was eventually killed in a battle with the English Nave near Ocracoke Island. To this day, people continue to search for Blackbeard’s hidden treasures…
Here are the clues to find one of his local rumored “buried treasures”. You will need to dock your ship in the parking lot of the Granville Elementary School. To get to this port, take route 22 from the south to Quaker St. Take a left hand turn onto Williams St. From the north, take route 149 to Main St. Main St. will become Quaker St. Take a right hand turn onto Munson Drive. Once on Munson, you will see the elementary school parking lot on your left.
Once you have tied up your vessel, go around the right hand side of the school to the back field. There is construction on the left hand side, so stick to the right. Once in the back field get yer bearings and look around fer a place where the young pirate bilge rats play. Go there. Take a swing or slide down the plank and pretend yer landing in the briney blue ocean. Now that you’ve got yer sea legs, look around the horizon for the double masts. Head there to find yer treasure. Look fer the place where the two topsails meet. Once you find it, go to the place where the gangplank starts. Under the gangplank you’ll find what yer looking fer.
Thanks fer finding our first letter box!
