This box is hidden at the AAUW building in Willow Glen (next door to the willow glen library at 1165 Minnesota Ave. We chose this building as our hiding place because it is the meeting place for the AAUW American Association of University Women. We wanted to make people aware of all these women do to support the educational pursuits of young women nationwide.

In 1888, the founders of the American Association of University Women established the first fellowship in this country for a graduate woman scholar. Ida Street received $350 to pursue a graduate degree in education at the University of Michigan, at a time when no women served on the school's faculty and the era of women's suffrage was a generation away.

1. A century later, the AAUW Educational Foundation awarded $2.8 million in fellowships and grants to 297 exceptional women across the country and around the world.
2. In 1885, the Foundation's forebearers sponsored radical research debunking the popular notion that higher education was harmful to women's health. This revelation heralded a new age for women in education and professional careers.
3. A century later, the groundbreaking study: The AAUW Report: How Schools Shortchange Girls identifying pervasive gender bias in our nation's schools - was issued in paperback and translated into French, Spanish, and Chinese.
