From Hwy 32 just south of Laona in Forest County, turn right onto County Road T and follow the signs to the National Forest Campground at Bear Lake. Keep to the right rather than veering left toward the campground itself when you arrive there. Proceed approximately half-a-mile or so until you see a small parking area on the right near a trail sign reading "Cub Lake." It is a short hike through the forest to the lake from this point. Take note of the wonderful bog vegetation from the boardwalk to the fishing (or meditation!) platform. In the spring, you may see pink lady's slippers. (Don't pick them! These orchids take up to fifteen years to mature and bloom.) Loons inhabit this quiet lake and yes, there are bears in the area!
To find Little Cub, count off approximately 80 steps from the stones marking the start of the trail at the parking lot as you head toward the lake. There will be a cluster of three trees on your right. Within your line of vision, but slightly to the left of these trees, is another clump of three trees about fifteen feet into the woods. The letterbox is there between the trunks. PLEASE rehide it well beneath the bark and branches when you are through! Sadly, the first Little Cub that was placed nearby vanished!
