Information about the Garrison:
The William Damm Garrison is the oldest Garrison house in existence and the oldest house in Dover, New Hampshire. The Garrison house has had many visitors who were some of the first settlers of Dover Neck about 283 years ago. This house holds many valuable artifacts and they are placed all around the Garrison for people to see.
William Damm was born on October 14, 1653 and was the son of Deacon John Damm. In 1642 the land was divided and extended back giving citizens various lots. Deacon John Damm got three of the lots and saved them until his son got older. When William turned about twenty-two years old his father gave him the land and helped him build the garrison. Later William married a girl who owned and lived in the lot south of Damm’s land.
William lived in the house until he passed away in 1718 and then left the house to his son. His son resided in the house until 1740 when he died and the house became his sister’s. The house kept getting passed down to members of the family and their families. The garrison was in possession of William Damm and his family for about ninety-five years, in possession of the Drew family one-hundred and twelve years, and in possession of Mrs. Rounds thirty three years; a total of 240 years.
A Garrison house is a fortified place where a body of troops can gather for shelter. That was the use of the William Damm Garrison House in the 1600’s. Today the Garrison House is the final standing house in New Hampshire that was used as shelter. It stands in the center of Downtown Dover, New Hampshire. The Garrison House is open to all visitors. Anybody can go and learn the history and way of life at the time the house was in use.
