Fort Klock was built by Johannes Klock, a Palatine German pioneer, in 1750, replacing an earlier dwelling. It was the home of his son, Col. Jacob Klock, commanding officer of Tryon County Militia during the Revolution (1775-1783)

Deep within the Mohawk Valley lies one of America's great historical treasures. Located on 30-plus acres, it appears to be a simple park or a well kept homestead on New York state's Route 5. Yet the history of this place dates back to the earliest days of the Mohawk Valley. Today it serves as gathering place for young and old alike who wish to learn more of their past, culture and struggles which led to the founding of the United States. Today Fort Klock serves as a place of relaxation, reflection and learning, a place where all are welcome and can go away feeling better for having visited.

GETTING THERE:
From the East . . . Use Exit #29 from NYS Thruway (Canajoharie). Proceed westerly on NYS Route 5S about one half mile to traffic light (a "Dummy Light" on a cement bulwark). Turn right at the light onto NYS Route 10 North and cross the Mohawk River. At the traffic light on the northside of the river, turn left onto NYS Route 5 and proceed west through the Villages of Palatine Bridge and Nelliston about 9 miles. Fort Klock will be on the right hand side of the highway. Note that after leaving Nelliston you will see "Fort Waggoner" (home of LieutenantColonial Colonel Peter Waggoner) on the right-hand side about two miles west of Nelliston and then the Palatine Lutheran Church on the right just after crossing over the Caroga Creek. Both are pre-Revolutionary War Structures. You will also pass by, on the right, the beautiful farmstead of General James Cochran, an associate of General George Washington in the American Revolutionary struggle.

From the West . . . Use Exit #29A from the NYS Thruway about ten miles (Little Falls). Continue north from the toll-booth until you reach the traffic light (N.B. you will cross over the Mohawk River prior to reaching the light). At the light turn right onto NYS Route 5 East and proceed easterly through the Village of Saint Johnsville about 10 miles. Fort Klock will be on your right. Note that about one mile before reaching Fort Klock, you will pass the Nellis Tavern, an excellent example of late 18th Century architecture, on the right.

To learn more about Fort Klock, call 518-568-7779 or visit their website: www.fortklockrestoration.org.

Once on the site, head toward the 18th century Dutch Barn. Once there, travel toward the Fort about 40 paces. To your left, you should see a stone wall that runs toward the East. Follow along that wall, and nestle beneath the old oak tree, there you will find "Hunny Bear" enjoying his treat!

Happy hunting!
