Illinois River Letterbox
I & M Canal Series
Headwaters of the Illinois River

To get to McKinley Woods by bike: follow the I&M Canal bike path west from Channahon, or east from Morris (a longer ride).

To get there by car: follow US 6 a mile west of Channahon, then McKinley Woods Road south to its end at the park. Bring a picnic lunch!

A stone overlook on the bank allows you to survey the birthplace of the Illinois River. Just to the east of here, the DuPage River joins the Des Plaines River. Across the water to the south, the Kankakee enters through several channels upstream and downstream from here. These three rivers combine to create the Illinois River, which flows 275 miles down to meet the Mississippi.

From the overlook, cross the footbridge over the old canal and take the first right down to the bank. Ascend the wooden staircase to an rustic stone shelter.

Look past the horseshoe pits to find a trail leading off into the woods.

Follow the trail across a little wooden bridge. Take the high road where the trail splits. Cross another little bridge. Eventually the trail will curve around to rejoin its partner. From here, follow the trail leading up the ravine. Climb the crude staircase. Now look up ahead for a bare half-fallen tree. Follow this down to its roots where the letterbox is hidden.
