This letterbox is part of the GO York Kids Get Outdoors and Be Creative! program. It will be available from June 6, 2009 – September 7, 2009. Further details about the program may be found at www.goyork.org.

In addition, the program uses creativity stations – wooden posts with engraved plates on them – instead of a traditional letterbox and stamp. Please carefully rub the impression from the engraved plate into the program Sketch Book, available at any York County library.

The letterbox is located at Indian Steps Museum (Lower Chanceford Township). GO York Kids level of difficulty = Easy

1. Leaving the parking lot, head down the path toward the yellow museum. Walk past the small stone structure on your right.
2. Look up and see the outstretched wings of a thunderbird. Circle around and look up to see more mythical Native American symbols.
3. Stand under the turtle and fish and look straight ahead. Can you see the sundial?
4. After checking the ‘time’, make your way to the stone walk in front of the museum. Look out over the Susquehanna River toward the Lancaster County hills. Walk to the bottom of the steps.
5. Look to your left, past the bench and over the end cornerstone, to the large tree across the lawn. Make your way over to see what kind of tree it is.
6. Now cross the bridge to the left of the tree.
7. Make another left at the end of the bridge and walk approximately 40 adult paces to see a 350 year old protected treasure!
8. Facing the marker in front of this tall “treasure”, walk to the right to the 5th post and look for the “treasure” you seek behind you.
9. For a longer adventure, check out the nature trail in the Ulmer-Root-Haines Memorial Park right next door.
