The "Father Of Texas" is Stephen F. Austin because in 1821 he settled the first Anglo-American families in Texas. The San Felipe State Historic Site is located where he brought the first 300 families to colonize Texas under a contract with the Mexican Government. It has a large statue of Austin, as well as a replica of his only home in Texas, an original well dug by his colony, and the J.J. Josey General Store. This letterbox used to be here but was forced to move nearby to the San Felipe De Austin Cemetery. San Felipe De Austin was established in 1824 as the community and administrative headquarters of Stephen F. Austin's original colony, and the original Mexican charter contains a survey which set aside this site for cemetery purposes. Many of this area's early pioneers and leaders are buried here.
Directions:
Coming from Houston on I-10, take the San Felipe Exit for FM 1458. Go right on 1458 for about 2 or 3 miles (if you get to the park road you went too far). Turn left on Campo Santos Dr. (just after a church) and park on the left at the first arch of the San Felipe De Austin Cemetery, next to flags and a Historical marker. The San Felipe SHS is a little further on FM 1458.
Clues:
Walk through the small gate and ready marker. Go right and get on roadway and start walking. Take right turn on roadway and go until small brick building on left. Walk to that building. Now go right along fence to first big tree (Cedar). Letterbox is between base of tree and the fence behind it. Please replace as described.
