4-25-11 - THIS LETTERBOX HAS BEEN REPORTED AS MISSING...AGAIN! aRRRGH! We'll try to find it or replace it as soon as possible. Will post here when it is ready.

8-15-10 - This Letterbox has been re-"planted"!!! Clue modified slightly for clarity.

Willow Hill Elementary was home to Cub Scout Pack 137 for many years. After the closure of Norris Elementary after the 2007-08 school year, the Pack merged with the Norris Pack 135. In December 2008, the two packs became one with a new number incorporating parts of both: Pack 35. In honor of our successful first year together, our Webelos I Scouts contributed design ideas to our stamp and in the box you’ll find our final product. We hope you enjoy it!

Here’s how to find our first letterbox:

Travel to Willow Hill Elementary School, located at 1250 Hill Street, which is on the west side of Traverse City, between Munson Hospital and the West Arm of Grand Traverse Bay. Park in the school parking lot. Follow the sidewalk from the front of the school to the crosswalk at the top of Hill Street. Cross the street and take a short walk on the sidewalk toward the city. Take the first path on your right, near the bike rack. You are now entering Ashton Park. After a very short walk on this trail, there is an opening where the trail divides. There are evergreen hemlocks in this area. Take the trail to the left…it will generally parallel the sidewalk. Pass over the large roots…watch your step! Continue on this trail until you get to the top of a small hill. Stand between two trees which flank the trail and can be (or almost be) touched at the same time with outstretched arms as you face down the hill. With arms outstretched, take one step backward. Your right arm will be pointing at a large beech tree (the trunk looks like poured concrete at the top) with a split in the base. That is where you will find the prize!

Please re-hide well as the trail is used heavily during the school year and when the leaves die back in fall, the split in the tree is even more visible. There are lots of dead limbs and pieces of bark around the area to use if the original coverings are missing or insufficient.

For another non-letterbox prize, take a drive up Wayne Hill after you leave the school. It is located one block south of Hill Street. Travel west on Wayne, go up the hill and enjoy the beautiful view of our great area!
