The San Elijo Hills are located east of Carlsbad, west of Escondido and south of Vista in the city of San Marcos.
There are 2 ways to get to this box. #1 is longer and more hilly.
#1 - From Rancho Santa Fe Road, take San Elijo Road east to San Elijo Hills (a little town sort of sprang up here in the last few years). Park near the baseball field in one of the public parking areas or along the street before you reach Schoolhouse Road. Find the bike and foot traffic road that leads to the dog run where there is a sign that reads "service vehicles access only" posted. Follow this asphalt trail passing concrete vents PO43064AV, PO43051AV and PO43042AV. You will climb up and down the rolling hills until you come to Lighthouse Road. You will turn right here and pass through a black gate. On the left there is another uphill asphalt trail. Take this trail to the bench and there you will be able to look at the dam. It's quite a site!
After resting for as long as you need to, climb up the concrete walkway or use the switch back dirt trail to get to the start of the loop trail (marker is on right side of road). From this marker, head in a northerly direction to the next vent (you should be able to see it standing here). The number is PO33034AV. Directly across the road is a large round boulder. Behind and under the boulder is Psycho.
Continue on the trail to the tower for a great 360 degree view, or if you've had enough exercise head back down the way you came up.
#2 - To save some hiking time, drive to 1680 Lighthouse and park on the street. Go through the black gate and find the asphalt trail on the left. Follow clues to Psycho as described above.
