Revolutionary Apples

Did you know?
The saying "As American as apple pie" is referred to as the symbol of America. The word "apple" comes from the Old English word "aeppel." there are approximately 10,000 different kinds of varieties of apples grown in the world with more than 7,000 of these varieties grown in the United States. Apples are a member of the rose family of plants and the blossoms are much like wild-rose blossoms.

1779 - In 1779 (one year before the battle at Kings Mountain), Marquis de Lafayette entertained George Washington, general of the Continental Army, for dinner in 1779 under the shade of an old apple tree to map out Revolutionary War strategy against the British. Lafayette returned in 1824, during his tour of the United States, and was presented with a cane carved from this tree. The tree blew down in 1821.

Directions to this letterbox:
This letterbox is located just outside of Kings Mountain National Military Park. Spend the day hiking and learning all this wonderful site has to teach about the Revolutionary War. Upon exiting the park, you will see a dirt parking area to the right, just before the sign that you are entering Cherokee County. Travel east from the Cherokee County sign about 15-20 steps into the woods. In front of you, you will see a half tree flanked by two evergreen shrubs. Behind this tree is the letterbox “Revolutionary Apples”. Please re-hide well and enjoy!!!!
