To get to Horseshoe Springs, take I-80 west from Salt Lake City about 40 miles (yeah, it's out there) to exit #77. Turn left on Skull Valley Road and drive south. Just less than 10 miles from the freeway, turn right (west) into Horseshoe Springs. There's a bulletin board on the right as you start down the road, and a bridge leading over to the boardwalk going around the springs to the west.

You can park near the bridge and cross and walk all around the area. It's interesting to see all that water out in the middle of the desert.

You CAN do all that, but you don't need to, but I would recommend it. It really is interesting and a fun place to walk around. We didn't see any fish in the springs, but apparently people fish out there.

When you're ready to find the box, drive back toward Skull Valley Road. About halfway up the dirt road (did I mention that it's a well-maintained dirt road leading to the springs?) there's a little brown marker (not the kind you stamp with) that says "Hastings Cutoff - Horseshoe Springs".

From the brown marker, walk back toward the springs about 36 steps and look to the south. There is a rock--not a big rock, but bigger than most other rocks around there--that has a pretty conspicuous pile of rocks behind it. Watch for lizards! And bring insect repellent; there are plenty that you'll need to repel!

It may not be accessible when there's snow on the ground. Watch out for bugs and lizards.
