On October 31, 1913 the route of the Lincoln Highway was dedicated as the first road across the United States of America. The Lincoln Highway ran through 13 states from New York City to San Francisco, California. In Utah, the route followed present day I-80 from the East into Tooele county, then headed south through Tooele, Stockton, and across the desert to Ibapah. A 1925 re-alignment of the Lincoln Highway took it through Grantsville, Utah where this letterbox is located.

To find this letterbox, take I-80 west to exit 84. Turn left on Stansbury Road, then left again on S.R. 138, toward Grantsville (if coming from Nevada, loop around on the exit and turn left on S.R. 138). In 5.8 miles or so, turn left onto Old Lincoln Highway road (you can tell you're getting close now, right?)

Just over a mile from the turn off you'll pass a nursery on the left and see the Wal-Mart Distribution Center far to the right. Here's where it gets tricky. There's a large rock on the right side of the road. It's about 2 feet tall and sits on a little pile of dirt and smaller rocks. There's not a great place to pull over, but fortunately it's not a very well-traveled road.

Around the back of this rock on the right side is a very conspicuous pile of rocks hiding our tribute to Abraham Lincoln and the Highway built as a tribute to him.

From here, you can continue on to Grantsville city (and from there back to Salt Lake via S.R. 138) or turn around, hop back on the freeway, and continue on to our box at Horseshoe Springs.
