Directions from I-81*
1. Take exit 245 for Port Republic Rd toward VA-253
0.2 mi
2. Turn left at Port Rd/Port Republic Rd
0.6 mi
3. Turn left at Memorial Dr/Turner Ashby and park in the parking lot.

Adult clues*
1. Pass the no trespassing sign, notice when the monument is open.

2. Walk up the hill to the white sign on the right side. Read about the Battle of Harrisonburg. Count the number of generals and colonels mentioned on the sign.
FACT: The name Turner Ashby High School was selected by the Rockingham County School Board because of the school’s location in the Ashby District of the county. The district was named for Turner Ashby who fought and died in battle near Harrisonburg during the Civil War.

3. Now, walk to the back of the sign, read over all the people who contributed to the improvements to the site. Count all the “Ashby’s” and “Turner Ashby’s” on the list.
FACT: General Turner Ashby was killed on a skirmish on Chestnut Ridge near Harrisonburg, VA on June 6,1862.


4. Walk down the path to the big rock by the fence. Sit and rest on the rock. Notice the old road on the other side of the fence. FACT: It is the old entrance to the site from Port Republic Road.

5. Now, look at the tree directly in front of you as you sit on the rock. Go to the tree find the mouse entrance. What other kinds of animals do you think live there?

6. Start walking back up the path; look for a rotting half stump on the right side. Go to it. Count how many signs of life there are.

7. Walk up to the monument to pay your respects to General Turner Ashby. Look at the year that he died. How many years ago did he die?
FACT: He was on the confederacy who fought for the south.

8. Walk up the path and go around the curve. Stop at the tree on your left at the end of the flower bed.

9. Turn 90 degrees to your right. Find the tree with a hole in it. Go find the box.

10. Make sure to return the letter box and completely cover it up with leaves, sticks, acorns etc…… Thank you! We hope you had an enjoyable time.


CHILDREN’S CLUES
1. Walk on the v shaped sidewalk towards the entrance.

2. Hop around the no trespassing sign 3 times.

3. Run to the white sign. Notice the tree on the right makes the letter v.

4. Read about the Battle of Harrisonburg. Count how many v’s there are in the sign. Notice General Turner Ashby on the horse on the map.

5. Walk down the path to the last tree in the flowerbed on the left. Stop and go around the corner in the direction of the monument. Notice the bumpy tree in the middle of the flowerbed on the left. How many different shapes, figures or letters can you find?

6. Turn and walk down the path until you’re about 5 - 6 ft. from the end of the paved part. Turn left and walk to the second half tree stump. Look for signs of life.

7. Turn 180 degrees and look for the orange and white marker. Look slightly up and try to figure out what letter the tree makes.

8. Then walk to the Turner Ashby memorial. Now get your pencil and paper from your parent and rub on the date General Turner Ashby died. Play ring–around the rosy around the memorial. Remember to close the gate on your way out.

9. Walk back to the path and walk down to the BIG rock by the fence. Sit and relax for a minute. Look up at the tree closest to the rock. What number does the tree make?

10. Run back up the path until you get to the end of the flowerbed at the top of the flowerbed.

11. Look straight a head and find the tree with the big hole in the middle.

12. Go and find your treasure.

13. When you are done please put the box carefully away and cover it COMPLETELY with leaves, twigs, etc.

14. Even though you are done, you can continue to look around the forest to find more letters and numbers made in nature. How many others can you find? Lastly, as you leave and walk down the path to the entrance, what letter do you see on the right side?
