Studio Ghibli Films Directed by Hayao Miyazaki Series:
BOX 7 – Spirited Away Letterbox

Hayao Miyazaki is a well-known filmmaker of many popular animated feature films. He is also a co-founder of Studio Ghibli, an animation studio and production company. He remained largely unknown to the West, outside of animation communities, until Miramax released his 1997 Princess Mononoke. By that time, his films had already enjoyed both commercial and critical success in Japan and Central Asia. Miyazaki's films often incorporate recurrent themes, such as humanity's relationship to nature and technology, and the difficulty of maintaining a peacekeeper ethic. Reflecting Miyazaki's feminism, the protagonists of his films are often strong, independent girls or young women; the villains, when present, are often morally ambiguous characters with redeeming qualities.

“Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi”
Spirited Away is a fantasy adventure with a ten year-old girl, which starts in everyday Japan but goes somewhere very different. For young Chihiro and her family, a mysterious tunnel and haunted town lead to the Land of Spirits, inhabited by gods and monsters and ruled by the greedy witch Yubaba. Chihiro's parents are transformed into pigs; to rescue them, she must surrender her name and serve in this world. Luckily she finds friends and allies, including the handsome but mysterious boy Haku. Initially sulky and listless, Chihiro (or Sen, as she's now called) finds inner strengths and establishes an identity in this strange world. But can she win back her name and return home?
Spirited Away was released in Japan in July 2001, drawing an audience of around 23 million and revenues of ¥30 billion (approx. US $250 million), to become the highest-grossing film in Japanese history. The film was dubbed into English by Walt Disney Pictures. It was released in the United States on September 20, 2002.
The film received many awards, including the second Oscar ever awarded for Best Animated Feature, the first anime film to win an Academy Award, the first (and so far only) non-English speaking animation to win, and the only winner of that award to be traditionally animated or win among five nominees (in every other year there were three nominees). The film also won the Golden Bear at the 2002 Berlin International Film Festival (tied with Bloody Sunday). Spirited Away overtook Titanic in the Japanese box office to become the highest-grossing film in Japanese history.
The English-dub version stars many famous voice actors including Tara Strong, Daveigh Chase, and Suzanne Pleshette.

Directions:
From Heber: Turn onto 100 S/ Hwy 113 W. In Midway, take a left on Center St/ Hwy 113 S following the brown “Soldier Hollow” signs. Pass Tate Lane on the right (there are historic trains on the intersection of Tate Lane and Hwy 113). Shortly, there is a parking area for the Provo River Restoration Project on the left. There are cement pillars on either side of the road into the parking area (the one on the right states, “Provo River Restoration Project”). If you come to the Deer Creek State Park fee area on the right, you’ve gone too far.
From Provo Canyon: Take US-189 to Heber City. Take a left at S 3600 W/ S Charleston Rd/ UT-113. Turn right into the parking area for the Provo River Restoration Project. There are cement pillars on either side of the road into the parking area (the one on the right states, “Provo River Restoration Project”). If you come to Tate Lane (there are historic trains on the intersection of Tate Lane and Hwy 113), you’ve gone too far.
I picked this spot because Chihiro’s friendship with a river spirit plays an important part in the film!

Clues:
1) Start on the trail to the right of the bathrooms. The trail heads behind the bathrooms, toward the river and then forks. Take the left fork, which will put the river to your right.
2) Walk through a small thicket.
3) When the thicket opens up, you should notice a large standing dead tree just to the right of the trail.
4) Stand beside this tall tree. The water should be to your right, and the trail to your left. Take 5 steps straight and stop.
5) Drop down on the right. You’ll be standing on two large boulders that are touching one-another.
6) Look under the meeting point of these two boulders and the box is behind a small rock. This can be a high traffic area so be as quick and discreet as possible.
7) Since I am unable to check on the box, please contact me with an update on how my letterbox is doing! Blazehime7@aol.com
