Hayao Miyazaki is a well-known Japanese filmmaker of many popular animated feature films. He is also a co-founder of Studio Ghibli, an animation studio and production company. He remained largely unknown to the West, outside of animation communities, until Miramax released his 1997 Princess Mononoke. By that time, his films had already enjoyed both commercial and critical success in Japan and Central Asia. Miyazaki's films often incorporate recurrent themes, such as humanity's relationship to nature and technology, and the difficulty of maintaining a peacekeeper ethic. Reflecting Miyazaki's feminism, the protagonists of his films are often strong, independent girls or young women. The villains, when present, are often morally ambiguous characters with redeeming qualities.

風の谷のナウシカ
“Kaze no Tani no Naushika”
In the future, man has destroyed much of the earth during a nuclear holocaust called the “Seven Days of Fire.” Centuries following the “Seven Days of Fire” has left only small of pockets of humanity struggling to survive in a poisoned land, where almost nothing remains but empty deserts, acidic oceans, and a spreading toxic jungle (fukai, literally translated as “rotting sea, “sea of fungus, “or sea of corruption”). Princess Nausicaä lives in a small oasis, the Valley of the Wind. These people utilize wind farms to produce their needs, whilst they stand guard daily to defend the valley from the spread of the toxic jungle. Nausicaä enjoys spending her free time exploring the toxic jungle (while wearing a face mask since everything in the toxic jungle, including the air, is lethally noxious) in hopes of understanding the origins of the toxic world and all of its plants and insects. She has an unusual gift for communicating with the giant insects of the toxic jungle; particularly with the Ohm, a gigantic, armored caterpillar-like insect known as the most intelligent creatures in the toxic jungle.
Nausicaä is inspired by her mentor figure Yupa, a wandering samurai type possessed with great wisdom. Yupa travels the world in search of the mythological man in blue who, according to a legend, will appear surrounded by a sea of gold and reunite the differing nations with the natural world.
One night, a massive airship crashes near the valley. This crash drags the people of the Valley of the Wind into the middle of a battle between the kingdom of Pejite and the kingdom of Tolmekia. During the battle, an enraged herd of Ohm leaves the toxic jungle and threatens to overrun the Valley of the Wind. Nausicaä must find a way to stop the Ohm and convince the Pejite and Tolmekia to make peace.
The story holds deeper meaning than its depiction of war; there are both humanistic and ecological subtexts in Miyazaki's narrative. Even the insects seem to be working toward some secret harmony and the lethal fungal forest seems to have a vital role in Earth's new ecosystem.
The film was originally released in Japan on March 4, 1984, and sold almost a million tickets.
An uncut and re-dubbed version of Nausicaä was released on DVD by Buena Vista Home Entertainment on February 22, 2005. The English-dub version stars many famous voice actors including Alison Lohman, Patrick Stewart, Mark Hamill, Uma Thurman, and Shia LaBeouf.

Directions:
Driving on Camp Williams Rd/ S Redwood Rd/ S 1700 W/ UT-68, turn onto Jordan Narrows Rd. You’ll pass the Utah Veterans Memorial Cemetery on the right. Follow the road as it winds around. At a fork in the road go straight and take a left into the Jordan River Parkway Trailhead parking lot. Park here.

Clues:
1) Start by facing the bathrooms. Take the sidewalk on the left.
2) At a fork in the sidewalk, take the left fork towards the “10% Grade” sign.
3) Follow paved path downward as it “u-turns”.
4) Pass a yellow post in the middle of the paved path.
5) Go through a black gate and stop at the Stop Sign.
6) Make sure to watch for speeding construction trucks before you cross the road.
7) Walk on past the wooden-post railings. Head towards the wind turbines that remind me of Princess Nausicaä’s kingdom, the Valley of the Wind.
8) On the right is a sewer manhole beside a post that reads, “Caution Sewer Line”. Step off the paved path and walk on the old dirt/gravel road.
9) Walk past a dirt/gravel road on the right.
10) The road curves to the right. Go past a chain-link gate.
11) Pass the power pole and an electrical maintenance area (of sorts).
12) Head towards a red-roofed building in the far distance. You’ll walk under power-lines.
13) Stop just before the road takes a left and crosses the canyon on a levee.
14) On the right is a cluster of sagebrush and small multi-trunked trees. Head straight towards the flagpole off in the distance.
15) Stop at the far end of the sagebrush clusters.
16) The last two sagebrushes are dead. In-between the two dead sagebrushes is a large rock. Look under a pile of rocks in the space between this large rock and the bigger sagebrush.
