To find this box you can start from John Tynan Park in Middletown, Ct. To get to the park take Route 66 to Higby Road which is right next to the Red Dog Saloon on Route 66. Follow Higby until you get to the stop sign and the park is on the left. From I- 91 take Country Club Road and the park will be on the right just before the stop sign.

While planting another series a while ago, chthiker, Mona and I were heading back down the mountain and towards the parking lot. As we were preparing to take a turn on the trail we heard a large commotion and much to our surprise we saw police cruiser after police cruiser heading our way on a paved turn around just up from where we were standing. One after the other the cars screeched to a halt, doors were flung open and out poured dogs, large barking German Shepherd dogs. Dogs with large teeth. Lots of dogs with lots of large teeth. Policeman with guns. My first thought was that Mona must have robbed the local Petco!

We stood there like deer in the headlights for a few minutes, watching the cops watch us. We wondered if they thought we were trespassing and were they going to send the dogs after us. When it looked as though they weren’t going to come for us we decided it might be a good time to scoop up Mona and make a beeline to the car before they changed their minds.

I later learned that the local and state police use the area to train their dogs and we just happened to be in the right place at the wrong time.

While I was planting this box I heard gunshots which I assume were also from the police practicing. Aside from dogs and bullets, it’s a great place to hike. LOL

Ok, now for the box, from the parking lot follow the red/blue trail down the hill and over the stream which may be a challenge in the spring or after heavy rains. Once crossing, continue on red/blue until it takes a sharp right turn at a tree with barbed wire and yellow on it. Do not turn, but stop and look straight ahead to the three sister tree. Just beyond the three sisters is a fallen tree, look in the root end. This is the area where the dogs and police were.

Turn around to go back to your car, or continue on and up for more boxes.
