This is the second box in our dam series. The Edward MacDowell Dam is one of 5 flood control dams in the Merrimack River Basin built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The dam was built from 1948 to 1950 and cost only $2.01 million dollars. This dam protects Peterborough and other communities downstream.

Distance: 3 1/2 miles, with an option of 4 1/2 miles.

Driving Directions: From Nashua, US Route 3 to Exit 7, West on NH Routes 101A and 101, to Peterborough; follow signs to dam.

Drive across the dam and park in the lot by the restrooms. Look for the trail heading into the woods. Pick up a trail map in the box then head out along the West Ridge Trail. You will follow this yellow blazed trail for about a mile and a half.

As you walk you will pass several small boulder fields and have some lovely lake views. You will pass two side trails along the way. The first is a quick loop to your right down to the log jam. The second is a red trail to your left. Ignore both for this boxing adventure and walk until you reach the intersection of the yellow trail, a seasonal stream and the powerlines. You are now getting very warm.

Continue walking, enjoy the view of the beautiful stream and stop at a large wooden bridge. Before stepping up on the bridge, turn to 175 degrees and take about 40 steps. The box can be found tucked beneath the overhang of the boulder, patiently waiting behind the white door.

After finding the box you have two choices. Return the way you came, or if you picked up a map, continue on to the road, to go around the lake, past the swimming area, over the dam, and back to your car.
