Sparrow Rapids Letterboxes

This beautiful part of the Ottawa National Forest has some great little campgrounds, rivers, hiking trails and wildlife to keep any outdoor enthusiast busy!! There are wolves in the vicinity and if you're lucky at night, you'll get to hear them howl!! Take time to camp at the Sparrow Rapids Campground about 4 miles north of Kenton along the Ontonogon River. This is a great little campground - not alot of use, only 6 campsites!! The fishing in the river is fun too!! On a hot day play in the rapids behind the campsites and cool off - its a great place for kids and parents and dogs!

Clues: Just east of Kenton off M-28 lies a forest road next to the river that will lead you north, then another forest road will go off to the left to the Sparrow Rapids Campground (Follow the Signs!!). After turning in the campground, either, pick your camping spot or park in the visitor spot immediately on your right after turning in.

Sparrow Rapids Box: From the top of the stairs that will lead you from the camping or parking area to the river (near campsite #1 and the visitor parking area), take the number of letters of the indian name for which the river is called PLUS the number of letters of the bird name for which the rapids is called. Get a total number. Walk down that number of stairs. Look for a stump on your left. Behind the stump, behind some bark, you will find the treasure you seek.

Gone Campin' Box: This is an easy extra box since you've driven all the way to Kenton for a letterbox!! From the visitor parking area or your camping spot, walk out to the entry sign for the Sparrow Rapids campground. With your back against the sign, Take 5 paces (2 steps = 1 pace) at 152 degrees. You will come to an eight-stemmed red maple!!!! These eight stems form a convenient circle. At the center of the circle underneath twigs and debris you will find the treasure you seek!! This is a linoleum block stamp so really ink it up to get a good print. This is right on the road so be inconspicuous and cover it well!

Note: Neither of these boxes have ink pads to reduce the risk of odor (bears are plentiful here!!) and yummy temptation by critters.
