Cricket’s is one of our very favorite places to eat—just a tiny, home-style type place with great food and friendly people! One morning, 8 of use who travel together in our old classic cars and letterbox along the way, were sitting at Crickets eating breakfast and decided that this would be a great place for a letter box. We approached the owners who thought it sounded like fun and agreed we could place one outside of their restaurant. If you have never been to Lake Montezuma, you might want to take a day and visit Montezuma’s Castle and Well which are nearby. Then, hopefully, after you find the letterbox, you will have time for a wonderful breakfast or sandwich for lunch at Crickets (they are open Tues – Sat from 7:30-2 pm). You might also enjoy their awesome display of pictures of the night skies! We can highly recommend the homemade bear claws and cinnamon rolls!

This area is known as Lake Montezuma/Rimrock. You won’t find a very big town, however there is a golf course right across the street from Cricket’s and lots of sights to see around the Verde Valley.

Distance is only about 3 miles off I-17 from exit 293

If you are heading from Phoenix, take I-17 north to exit 293, which is the McGuireville/Cornville exit. As you get off the exit, head straight-ahead towards McGuireville. Take McGuireville Road, which becomes E. Beaver Creek Rd for about 1.7 miles. When the road splits, stay to the right onto N. Montezuma Lake Road (right before quick mart/car wash). Somewhere along the way it turns into N. Montezuma Ave, but just follow it as it winds along for about 1.3 miles, over the bridge (neat park for a picnic just past the bridge), past the golf course and down a residential type street. You will turn Left onto E. Zuni Way.

Drive around that little town square till you spot Crickets. Off to the right end of the porch (inside the block wall area) look for a little cubby with a decorative cinder block near the floor, covered by a decorative lid (specially designed by Jim & Marcy for this special hiding place). You’ve found it! Take care, you don’t want people to see where it is hidden and please don’t drop the lid. Hope you enjoy this little heavenly spot—far away from the hustle and bustle of any big town! Keep on boxing!
