.Enter into the north end of Devil’s Lake State Park.
.Hike the low trail along the west side of Devil’s Lake.
.Once you’ve turned south around the lake, pass two benches before reading the geological history of Baraboo Quartzite. (By the way, it is purple because of the flouride dissolved in the water when the sand turned to metamorphic rock.)
.You’ll pass two more benches before the trail meanders through the boulder field. This is a great place to wear out the kids, but be careful.
.As you enter into the trees on the far side of the boulder field, you’ll pass a large parallelogram-shaped rock on your right, a double tree on your left, and another large rock near the lake. As you round the next bend you’ll see a turtle staring out at the lake. He appears to have a either a mohawk haircut or feathers sticking out of the back of his head.
.Climb up on his back carefully, as there are many hiding foot-wrenching holes under the leaf litter. Look amongst the ‘feathers’ for what you seek.
