Bolton Letterbox #12

Approximate Time:
Clue Difficulty: Challenging, research of local area necessary
Hike Difficulty: Easy
Date Placed: July 2000
Originally Placed by: Elizabeth Bagdonas & Judy Loether
Formerly maintained by: Seekyr, Blaze, and Mobius
Currently maintained by: Rocklun

This letterbox is box number twelve of a series of letterboxes placed by
Elizabeth Bagdonas and Judy Loether and originally published in the
Bolton Common, Bolton, Massachusetts' local newspaper, during the
summer of 2000. These boxes are now maintained by a local group of
letterboxers and the clues to this series are now being made available
to the Internet community.

Part of the inspiration of the original series was to introduce locals
to the wonderful resources of the conservation lands in their area.
Since the original focus for these letterboxes was the local community
several of the clues have "local references", we have made minor
modifications to the original clues to correct for changes that have
taken place in the local conditions but have attempted to preserve the
challenge and creativity found in the original clues. We hope you take
up this challenge and use the resources available to you on the
Internet and elsewhere to solve the riddles and stamp in.

Now no bell tolls where peaceful souls
Once tilled the land, joined hand to hand.

They lie there still, on a small hill,
A testament to good intent.

To know them now, where goes no plow,
Through two small posts seek out their ghosts.

Tread quickly not! Let quiet thought
Guide you inside, where ancients bide.

Lest you forget the friends you met,
Look closely by the entrance nigh.

Their spirits tell us to live well.
Turn foes to friends, 'till journey ends.

Across from the road sign named for friends, through wall by huge sugar
maple, west across field to woods, through wall at first blaze, look
to right for second blaze, trail to west, then trail to south, through
walls, into field. The Conservation Trust trail guide will be
helpful. Please be sensitive to the private property boundaries.

Update: The trails have gotten quite overgrown since the original
placement and tracking the easement is challenging (especially with
current crop of poison ivy found along the trail during this summer
season). To avoid the ivy wear long pants or leave this box for
a winter find.

Rocklun's notes:
If you find yourself at the correct starting point and it looks like you're facing private property, go left and walk along the street to an unnamed road. Take a right onto this road and walk through the field to your destination, which is now easily visible. The property owner told me that this was the best way to access the destination, so don't worry that you're trespassing! Note, though, that this field might be growing corn in the summer, so your destination might be inaccessible during that time.
