Begin your search by locating the information necessary to solve the calculations listed below. All required information is easily available from plaques and signs on the lighthouse grounds. You can readily solve these clues without entering the lighthouse buildings.

A. The number of Patrick Garrity’s sons that became lighthouse keepers, multiplied by the third digit in the year the lighthouse was built.

B. The value of A divided by 3, and then multiplied by twice the number of years that Vern Bowen served as a lighthouse keeper.

C. The sum of all the digits in the year the lighthouse beacon was automated, minus the number of Vern Bowen’s children that placed their hand imprints in the cement at the gift shop entrance (not grandchildren! Hint: this is an odd number).

D. The height of the lighthouse tower, plus the sum of the digits in the year that Vern Bowen began his duty as a lighthouse keeper.

E. The sum of the digits in the final year that Patrick Garrity served as lighthouse keeper at this location, divided by the first two digits in the height of the lighthouse tower.

F. The value of D divided by 10, and then subtracted from the value of C (Hint: this answer should be the same as half the value of E).

The New Presque Isle Lighthouse Station,
A letterbox is your destination.
Many trails, only one is true;
It’s closest to the gift shop’s view.
North Bay Trail, the one to take,
You’ll soon see a view of the lake.

The bench awaits, a spot to rest,
But don’t stop now, you’re near your quest!
Behind the bench a new path awaits,
From the wooden seat, you’ll count your gait
___(A) paces amidst the trees,
Now stop and face ___(B) degrees.

(Forgot your compass? See the clues further below;
You’ll still be directed to where the letterbox is stowed.)

___(C) paces forward, then ___(D) degrees,
___(E) paces more, a fallen tree.
Its clean-cut face points to the lake,
The item you seek lies in place.
The rooted end is where to peek
If a letterbox is what you seek!

Continuation of clues for seekers without a compass:
No compass with you? No need to stop.
A stump at your feet, you’ll stand atop.
Face ___(F) o’clock, see two trees aligned
In your view, what lies behind?
A fallen tree with clean-cut face,
You’ve made it to the end of the race.
The rooted end is where to peek
If a letterbox is what you seek!

Retrace your steps to return to the parking area.
