Athletic Trail Letterbox

In the 1970’s the Shoreham-Wading River Exercise trail was built as a community service project by the US Dept of the Interior’s Bureau of Outdoor Recreation, the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, the U.S. Jaycees and the JC Penney Company. The Exercise Trail was developed based on extensive research with the key elements focusing on flexibility. It was originally designed with 20 stations, although many have fallen into disrepair. It is still a great hiking trail with lots of extras to add to the fun.

Go to the Shoreham-Wading River High School. On the West side of the parking lot are the Athletic Trails.

Bear left at the head of the trail and go through the tires, Then try to scale the fence.
Stay straight on the trail and go down the hill till you get to the fork in the road. Bear right at the double oak tree.
Now take a turn on the un-even bars. When you even out, go straight and you’ll come to a “Y” where you need to bear right.
Then take 30 steps to the bars on the left and give them a try.
Pass through the bars and go to the right and head for the next bars on the left. Keep on the path to more bars on the left and the sign of the #11 hiker.
Head straight to the criss-cross balance poles, but bear left before them.
Take 30 steps to the first fork in the path. Bear left and pass the sign of the 7.
Stop for a break and swing through the tire or take a walk on the tight rope wire.
Continue straight on the path just passed the sign of 8. To the right you will see a ladder in the sky. Take the path to the ladder and curve to the left
Curve up the hill and you’ll come to a Base on the right. When you see the second “No Trespass” sign on the fence you will find a small trail directly across on the left. Take the small trail and you will see where you can finally rest. Sit on the bench and look at the Base. Then stretch to the left to the “V” shaped White Oak tree. Hidden at this base, under the leaves by the moss is where you can find the Athletic Trail Letterbox.
