The movie. The 1957 movie "The Bridge on the River Kwai" was based on the book "Bridge over the River Kwai" by Pierre Boulle . The story is a fictionalization of the building of a bridge by slave and POW labor during the Japanese occupation of Burma in WWII and has the overzealous POW leader played by Alec Guinness trying to quash the sabotage of the bridge by escaped POWs William Holden and Jack Hawkins.

Awards. The movie won seven Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director (David Lean), Best Actor (Guinness), and Best Screenplay, Music, Editing and Cinematography. Sessue Hayakawa failed to get Best Supporting Actor in his role as the camp's commander, but did win the corresponding Golden Globe.

Clues

  1. In Dundas, you'll find a pedestrian bridge over the Cannon River connecting Mill Park and Memorial Park. Go to the middle of the bridge.
  2. Whistle 36 beats of "The Colonel Bogey March" as you march toward one end of the bridge.
  3. Although the movie was "on", and the book was "over", the cache/box is neither on nor over the bridge, rather it is ..... the bridge.
  4. In reality two bridges were constructed - one of wood, one of steel. The box touches both wood and steel.
