Letterbox Name: The Great American Pin-up Series: Liberty
Location: Libertyville, IL
Distance: Approximately 1.0 mile (round-trip)

Independence Grove is a Lake County Forest Preserve located in Libertyville, Illinois. It’s one of the larger preserves in Lake County, and is a spot that we’ve had in mind for a pin-up box since the beginning of the series.

In January 2009, Vanity Fair published an inauguration issue, with a cover photo that featured Tina Fey in a costume and pose that pays tribute to a Rolf Armstrong pinup painting from 1943. We couldn’t resist!

So “Liberty” was born as a patriotic pinup stamp, and can be found just north of Independence Grove.

The main entrance to Independence Grove is on Route 137, east of Milwaukee Avenue. Enter the preserve, and veer left as you pull away from the park ranger station. This road will bring you to the North Bay Shelter. Park near the shelter, and make your way to the Des Plaines River Trail (North).

Follow the Des Plaines River Trail signs north, past mile marker 15 on your left. The trail will curve to the right, eventually bringing you to a split rail fence and a map of Independence Grove.

Continue northward, following the Des Plaines River Trail until you reach the end of the split rail fence. From the end of the fence, count 25 paces, and look to your right. There, about 20 feet into the woods, is a fifteen-foot tall hollow stump. Liberty is hidden beneath some loose bark and wood inside the stump.

As always, please re-hide well. There is a lot of loose bark in the area, so feel free to add more if necessary.

The Great American Pin-up series is, first and foremost, a celebration of the style, femininity, and fun of pin-up art over the years. We hope that you enjoy the images as much as we’ve enjoyed selecting and carving them.

Please note: The stamp is a bit large, and will require a 4”x 6” space for stamping. This stamp will require red, blue, yellow and black ink.

Also, there is a nominal parking fee for those who are not Lake County Residents. For the latest on parking fees, please check the Lake County Forest Preserve District website at www.lcfpd.org.
