The Tumble Box

This box is dedicated to little Jonah who did quite a few tumbles one day when I was out with his family and another great hiking duo. The bridge you will cross was completely ice covered the day we hiked and crossing it was no easy feat (nor was the rest of the trail you will hike). So bridges ice up first and are the last to melt, even if the snow is almost completely gone everywhere else.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS:

This is a relatively easy 1.5 mile round hike at Wadsworth Falls State Park, located on Route 157, in Middletown CT. You may begin at any of the entrances to the park to get to the purple then yellow trails; however, the planned route of the hike starts from Laurel Grove Road, the first right just north of the park entrance. Park across from the gate at the brownstone blocks blocking the old cart road up to Wadsworth Mansion (blazed blue). You can also park at the mansion, if you are boxing there, and come the short way down the cart road from the parking lot to Laurel Grove Road.

CLUES:

Begin at the Laurel Grove Road gate and proceed northwesterly down the purple-blazed cart path (Bridge Trail), a continuation of the one coming down from the mansion. Once on Purple, you will soon cross a beautiful stone bridge (the site of many tumbles) and turn left on Yellow (Laurel Brook Trail). You will pass the old pump house for the Wadsworth Mansion and be hiking above Laurel Brook. Cross three bridges and turn right and begin your climb up the old cart road.

Just after you pass an interesting foundation on your left and reach the top of the hill,
turn right and stay to the right to start the Red Trail.

As you continue on Red you will see a really low stone wall on your right. Continue on Red as it begins downhill ignoring a side trail. (Speaking of tumbles, I have never made it down this little hill on my cross-country skis. Somehow the trees at the bottom keep getting in my way).

You will soon see what was once a double-blazed three sister tree on your left with a cousin beside it. The blaze used to be green and has now been blacked out. Look to your right for a stone wall with a large oak behind in. You can see another tree in the distance with a large burl. In front of the oak and low in front of the wall is the Tumble Box.

BACK TO THE CAR:

Continue on Green and keep to the right and turn right as Green joins again with Purple. You will be hiking in an easterly direction. Cross the beautiful stone bridge and soon you’re back to your car.

Hope you had a great time at Wadsworth Falls State Park.
