Phoebe Pond is a seasonal irrigation terminal pond northwest of Redmond. I named it for the first bird, a Black Phoebe (rare in this area), I saw there when I located the pond in the fall of 2001. A pair of Great Horned Owls has nested nearby and can often be seen in the area. While it can be somewhat dusty in the summer it is an interesting place to visit any time of the year. It is about a two mile round trip walk, the terrain is easy. All compass readings are magnetic.
To get there: Drive west out of Redmond on the Sisters Hwy (Highland Ave.). Turn right on Helmholtz Ave. at the Reindeer Farm. Continue on Helmhotlz to the T. intersection with Coyner Ave. Turn left then turn right onto the powerline right-of-way road. Park by the juniper.
To find letterbox 1: Walk north on the dirt road. You will pass a seasonal irrigation terminal pond on your left. Continue on past a rock outcropping on your right. Go through a gap in a fence, take the right hand road under the power lines. Take the next right on a dirt road and head east. Keep going generally east ignoring the roads to the right or left. The road will finally take a bend to the north for about the last 100 yards. You will see Phoebe pond on your left. Look for a small rock cairn, from it look for a tall juniper rising from a lava bed at 170 degrees, a large broad round juniper at 90 degrees. A partially obscured stump at 120 degrees hold the box.
Letterbox 2:Return to the rock cairn, then continue on around the south side of the pond. When you get to the west end of the pond you will see a small overflow area, walk on the bank between the overflow area and the main pond. Cross the overflow stream and turn left (toward the west) Walk along the bank of the overflow area (it becomes a ditch) watching on your right for a large, gnarly, old juniper tree.
There is a hole in the base of this tree. The box is in the hole.
Letterbox 3:Turn back to the pond and follow the bank around to the north side. You will see a flat area where vehicles have parked with debris piled around. A dirt road leads on around the north side of the pond. Follow the road keeping an eye to your right, look for a fallen, live juniper. The box is at it's roots.
Letterbox 4: Back to the dirt road, follow it east, past the pond and along the irrigation ditch. Walk on up the hill to where the road ends. Look for a large pine tree at 150 degrees, at 105 degrees is a skinny juniper on the ditch bank, with it's roots exposed. The box is hidden among the roots.
Letterbox 5: Cross over the ditch (if you can't step across or jump it there are boards across in two places down stream) and follow it back down stream. When you get back to the rock cairn follow the road back the way you came in. When the road swings sharply back to the west, pass one more juniper tree on your left then follow a small path to the left. Walk past two trees to you left, the last one quite large. A fallen tree will lie to your left. Look to the south, see that tree? Walk to it, there will be a stump on your left. Standing by that stump look for a stubby tree at 210 degrees. walk to it. Look south again for a three branched stump with moss around the base. You're almost there. The stump is hollow and holds you box.
