Though the Don’t Forget Lyndon Letterbox is in Lady Bird Johnson Grove, Lyndon Baines Johnson (or LBJ) was no slouch himself. He was an important representative to the House of Representatives from Texas and later an important senator. In fact he was the Senate Minority Leader, the Senate Majority Leader, the Senate Majority Whip, the 37th Vice President of the United States and the 36th President of the United States following the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963. Though the Vietnam Conflict was more or less his Waterloo he was responsible for pushing through important civil rights legislation.

Follow the signs on Hwy. 101 near Orick from Bald Hills Road up a couple miles to the Lady Bird Johnson Grove. Park and follow the trail over the road and onto the lovely loop trail. Pick up (and pay a dollar for) one of the excellent pamphlets.

At informational post #7 you will be in the heart of Lady Bird Johnson’s beloved redwood grove. Read the plaque dedicated to Lady Bird and then sit and relax, meditating of course on the Johnsons, on the first bench to your left as you enter the grove. Behind the bench is a large fallen horizontal redwood trunk. Go to the north end of the trunk and walk behind it. The Don’t Forget Lyndon Letterbox is under the fallen tree about 3 1/2 feet from the end behind some bark maybe a foot or so underneath.

Thanks for coming and please close everything up tightly before you resume your walk.
