The J. N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge is located on the subtropical barrier island of Sanibel in the Gulf of Mexico. The refuge is part of the largest undeveloped mangrove ecosystem in the United States. It is world famous for its spectacular migratory bird populations.
The Wildlife Drive, the refuge's public access road, is open Saturday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 1/2 hour before sunset. The Drive is closed every Friday to all access.
Location: Sanibel Island off Florida's Gulf Coast; across the causeway from Ft. Myers.
Size: 5,000+ acres.
Features: Barrier island. 243 bird species including tundra swan, bald eagle, and green-backed heron.
Activities: Hiking, canoeing, wildlife drives, bird watching.
Photos ops: Spoonbill, Great blue heron, Green-backed heron.
Visit C.R.O.W.’s new facility across from Ding Darling.

Locate J. N. Ding Darling on Sanibel Island. Cost is $5 per car. You can buzz threw or take several hours to enjoy all the wildlife you can spot. Drive to the look out tower.
Get out, stand at the base of the tower and walk 55 paces back against the traffic. ( A pace is right foot left foot = about 5 feet )
On your right is a tree strangling a palm tree. Walk to the back, at eye level you will find your exotic bird.
This can be a very populated area. Please be discreet.
Have fun.
