If you’re finding this box after find the “Great Salt Lake Series: Islands” box, continue West on the Great Salt Lake Road (North Temple). (Or, if you’re doing this box first—or only this box—exit I-80 at Exit 104, Saltair, go north to the gate of Saltair, and turn left (southwest)). Continue southwest past Saltair (but stop at the stopsign) until the road curves toward the Marina (about 1.5 miles from Saltair). At this point, the road splits in two. The right fork leads to the marina, the left continues southwest parallel with the freeway. That’s the one you want.
About .75 miles from the split, the road becomes gravel (if our car can make it, your car can make it). Watch out for the big bump at the transition, though. There may be times when the road is impassable; use your best judgment.
As you continue down the road, on your left you’ll see a freeway bridge with train tracks going beneath it. Stay off the tracks; you don’t need to go that way. Continue following the road to the right. (If you like trains like I do, though, you could park there and wait for one to pass, just be careful.)
Just as the road turns sharply to the right, heading directly toward Black Rock, turn left off the road into the gravel area on the west side of the road and park there.
There is a faint pathway continuing to the southwest from here. Walk until you see a cement barrier on the road at the top of the embankment to your left (at eye level for me, but you’ll probably need to look up). From this point, take 40 steps, still continuing to the southwest on the faint path. You’ll know you’re close to the right place if you see a big log about 30 feet to your right.
To your left, slightly uphill, are 2 big yellowish rocks that are roughly the same size as each other. Between these two rocks, on the downhill side, is a little pile of rocks protecting a small treasure.
While you’re signing in, face north and check out the views of Black Rock. You may want to continue your drive to Black Rock and climb around the rock, hit old golf balls out into the lake, eat a picnic lunch, or watch the sun set over the Great Salt Lake (the sunsets are usually magnificent).
