Witch Way in the Woods
Trail Maps available at the Sawmill parking lot
Find your way to the Mansion at the woods in Berks County which was originally owned by a man who produced hosiery. Take the self-guided tour around to learn about the woods and The Mansion. Do you see the Vane Witch atop the Mansion? While you visit be sure to note the following:
1. Number of Downspouts = D
2. Number of stone blocks that make up the arch around the front (office) door = S
2. Number of red stones that circle the lizard on the wall near the fountain = RS
3. Number of stone blocks that make up the circle fountain (top) = C
From the front (office) door of the Mansion take a bearing of S x 10. Follow the road as it curves right. At –cC-NN-LL go at a heading of RS x 30.
At the P Sign bearing S x 10 to the wooden steps.
At the crossroads take the path South. Note the name and stay on the trail until you come to a Y with a big tree and no path post -- go west.
At Gravel path go South.
At the triangle bearing is C x 20.
Stay on the path for a while. As your walking look for the standing hollow tree you can almost see through!
At the next path post take the trail east. Note the name.
At next path post stay on the same trail (see the row of rocks on the right??)
At the next path post take D steps.
Look for three hardwood trees that are north among the conifers down Witch’s Way.
What you seek is at the base of the hardwood that is the furthest from your location.
