If you’re feeling like a geology field trip with great scenery and a short hike, this letterbox is for you. It’s family friendly, but a wheelchair would be very difficult to use here even though there is a paved path.
The Erratic Rock State Natural Site is the location of a 90-ton glacial erratic rock that originally rested along the Clark Fork River in southwest Montana. About 13,000 to 15,500 years ago, a 3,000 square mile lake known as Glacial Lake Missoula. The ice dam collapsed sending floodwaters across eastern Washington and down the Columbia River toward the Pacific Ocean. Water nearly 1,000 feet deep covered the Columbia River Gorge and the Willamette Valley. Huge boulders were brought with the ice and as the floodwaters receded, were deposited throughout the Willamette Valley.
The boulder found at this geologic site is the largest known glacial erratic to be found in the Willamette Valley.
From Highway 18 between McMinnville and Sheridan, look for Oldsville Road. Follow Oldsville Road to the parking area on the shoulder. Go up the paved path – it gets steep toward the top. When you get to the top, take a deep breath and get a good look around. If it’s clear you can see Mt. Hood, Mt. Jefferson, the Willamette Valley, and miles of vineyards surrounding you. Step up on the top of the rock and face south. To your left you will see Mt. Hood in the distance. To your right you will see a wooden corner fencepost at the top of the vineyard below. The letterbox is tucked away at the bottom of the post, covered in grass.
Let me know if you find it!
